Triple concerto extravaganza - and an upcoming trip to Gettsyburg, Pennsylvania
It's a double-bill triple concerto concert and it's finally here!
After much postponement, we couldn't be more excited to finally bring Clarice Assad's new triple concerto into the world with Barbara Day Turner and the San José Chamber Orchestra. We'll also be performing Beethoven's joyous Triple Concerto on the same program.
A Story of Mermaids by Grammy-nominated composer Clarice Assad is a gorgeous and captivating new work. It explores mermaid mythology across cultures - from Yara the Brazilian killer siren to Ondine, the water nymph of European tradition. Clarice writes, "Tales of mermaids occupy centuries in our collective imagination, appearing under various guises, names, cultures, and forms." Brazilian rhythms, homages to Debussy and Stravinsky, soaring solos, and a kaleidoscopic orchestral color palette - this piece has it all.
Liana and Tanya get to play the acquaphone and the ocean drum (in addition to their regular instruments of course). New experiences for everyone!
Here's a snippet of the piece from a recent rehearsal to whet your appetite.
If you'd like to learn more about the work, our commissioning process, and other topics, we'll be chatting with Sarah Cahill and Barbara Day Turner this Sunday on Revolutions Per Minute, KALW radio 91.7, 6-8pm.
We hope you'll join us for this celebratory and extraordinary music!
